Structures built on reactive soils, where moisture
movement is causing problems, root barrier can help.
By surrounding the structure with a waterproof root
barrier to the depth of "the zone of influence" normally
2 to 3 metres deep, moisture levels under the structure
can be returned to normal. As the area under the building
is effectively isolated, moisture cannot move and
so the block of soil the building sits on becomes
stable, repairs to the building can be completed.
Placement of root barriers partially around the building
may be an option if a particular cause to the moisture
movement can be identified such as a tree, the depth
of the root barrier to "the zone of influence" should
be maintained.
